That is what these apps do. They run diffusion models like Stable Diffusion, FLUX, and Apple's own foundation models directly on your Mac's GPU, generating art from text prompts while your ideas stay on your machine. Some go further with inpainting to fix a region, outpainting to extend a scene, or LoRA training to teach the model your own visual style. We evaluated 30 Mac apps in this category across capability, craft, privacy, and value. The range is wide — from a full pro studio with ControlNet and video generation down to single-purpose playgrounds that produce a passable image in three clicks. Most are free. A few are hybrid, offering optional cloud compute for speed while keeping local generation fully private. Here are the results, ranked.

How to choose AI Image Generation for Mac
The gap between the strongest and weakest apps here is enormous, so the criteria that matter are specific.
Model generation is the single biggest differentiator. Draw Things supports SDXL, FLUX, Qwen, and Wan; Imago runs the modern FLUX.2 klein 4B; several others are limited to Stable Diffusion 1.5 or unnamed models. Newer architectures produce dramatically better images — check which models an app ships or can load before committing.
Pro tooling separates studios from toys. Inpainting, outpainting, ControlNet, image-to-image, and on-device LoRA training are available in the top tier but absent from most of the field. If you need to edit regions of a generated image or fine-tune the model on your own visual style, only a handful of apps deliver.
Privacy architecture varies more than you might expect. Every app here runs at least some generation on-device, but the details diverge. Some are fully offline with no network calls. Others offer an optional cloud path for faster output — Image Playground, for example, routes its Any Style option through ChatGPT. Look for apps where the cloud path is clearly opt-in.
Price model skews free across the top picks. A few charge a one-time fee (Guernika at $1.99, Picture This… at $29.99). Watch for apps that are free to download but gate features behind subscriptions or cloud-compute credits.
Hardware floor matters: local diffusion is GPU-intensive. Nearly every capable app requires Apple Silicon, and the best results come from machines with 16 GB or more of unified memory.

Can I run Stable Diffusion on my Mac?
Yes — several apps in this category run Stable Diffusion models locally on Apple Silicon. Draw Things supports SDXL and newer variants alongside FLUX and Qwen. Guernika and JoyFusion load Core ML–converted Stable Diffusion checkpoints. Amazing AI runs the older SD 1.5 fully offline. You will need an Apple Silicon Mac, and 16 GB of RAM helps significantly with larger models.
Do these AI image generators work without an internet connection?

What Mac hardware do I need to generate images locally?
Apple Silicon is the baseline — virtually every capable app requires an M-series chip. For basic SD 1.5 generation, 8 GB of unified memory is workable. Running newer models like SDXL or FLUX.2 comfortably calls for 16 GB or more, plus 10–20 GB of free disk space for model weights. Generation is slower than cloud services but comes with unlimited runs and no per-image cost.
